Questions worth answering up front
Is my piece really worth more than what a pawn shop will offer? Almost always, by 20 to 45 percentage points. Pawn shops pay 30–55% of fair market value. Direct platforms with published spreads pay 80–95%. The math doesn't favor convenience.
Do I need to ship anything to get a valuation? No. Three photos and a coin for scale. Shipping is optional and only happens if you decide to sell.
What about my tax basis? For inherited items, your basis is the fair market value on the day the prior owner died — not what they paid. Documenting that value early matters more than most heirs realize.
Can my kids see what I've set aside for them? Yes, when you invite them. They see only the items tagged to them, in a read-only family view. You see the audit log: who looked, when, from where.
